Sidecars, Side by Side

Ariel SQ4 997cc & 1956 Steib S501 Sidecar

The Square 4 was restored in 2003, with paintwork by Alan Templeton. A really nice machine to ride – plenty of power to pull a rather heavy Steib sidecar. The bike was well used around Surrey in all weathers but it still looks as good as new. I converted it to a 12v Boyer ignition system and as a result it is an easy starter.

Those that have not ridden a SQ4 cannot appreciate the torque that the engine develops. The rear suspension is by Anstey Link, which must be kept well greased every 250 miles but works well.

The Steib sidecar is, in my view, the Rolls Royce of sidecars. Comfortable, with room for luggage behind the seat. As most Steibs were imported coated only in primer you could stipulate your preferred colour to match the bike.

Ariel 649cc Huntsmaster Twin 1958 & Garrard Grand Prix Child/Adult Sidecar

Restored in 1993, the bike was purchased in Guildford having been restored by a local that I could trust to do a good job. The Garrard Grand Prix chair, in a child + adult form, is very rare. Very few were made in this form. It also came with all weather protection.

The sidecar is pulled very well by the Ariel Huntsmaster but requires careful riding as the chair wheel lifts quite easily.

Both machines have been tested by Mortons’ Classic Motorcycle Magazine, the Huntsmaster in 1993 and the SQ4 in 2006. They were put through their paces with a full test, rather than being merely ridden to the end of the drive and back.

A credit to the ARE Classic Motorcycle Collection. Other outfits are also on show.
